Quick answer

Your computer name helps the PCMIT Help Desk identify the correct managed device. In Windows 11, open Settings > System > About and read the Device name shown near the top of the page.

Before you begin

Sign in to the computer that needs support.

You do not need administrator access to view the device name.

Share only the Device name requested by PCMIT. Do not send passwords, recovery keys, product keys, or unrelated identifiers.

Steps

  1. Right-click the Windows Start button.
  2. Select Settings.
  3. Select System from the left sidebar.
  4. Select About near the bottom of the System page.
  5. Find Device name near the top of the About page.
  6. Carefully copy or type the complete device name into the support ticket.
  7. Leave the Rename this PC control unchanged unless PCMIT has separately authorized a rename.

Alternate method

  1. Select Start.
  2. Type About your PC.
  3. Open About your PC from the search results.
  4. Read the Device name displayed on the About page.

Expected result

You can provide PCMIT with the exact Windows device name without changing the computer, its network settings, or its managed configuration.

⚠️ Stop and contact PCMIT when

  • ⚠️ The device name is blank, unexpected, duplicated, or different from the label on the computer.
  • ⚠️ Windows asks for administrator credentials or displays a security or organization-policy message while you are only viewing About.
  • ⚠️ You are unsure which identifier PCMIT requested or are considering renaming the computer.

Include the name currently shown under Device name and a safe screenshot with unrelated identifiers hidden when possible.

Contact the PCMIT Help Desk

Never include a password, MFA code, recovery key, Windows product key, or other secret in a support request.
