Quick answer

Self-help is appropriate for a few low-risk actions, such as saving work, checking a cable, recording an error, or performing one normal restart. Stop when the next action could affect personal safety, security, data, access, encryption, shared systems, or another user.

Safe actions before contacting PCMIT

Stop clicking or making changes when you are uncertain.

Record the exact error message, time, device name, and affected task.

Take a safe screenshot only after hiding passwords, recovery keys, financial details, health information, and other sensitive data.

Keep the device powered on and connected unless there is an immediate electrical, battery, smoke, heat, liquid, or fire hazard.

⚠️ Stop immediately for electrical or physical danger

  • ⚠️ You see smoke, sparks, swelling, leaking battery material, or liquid near powered equipment.
  • ⚠️ You notice a burning or chemical odor, unusual heat, electrical damage, or a damaged or loose power connection.
  • ⚠️ A UPS displays a fault, sounds a continuous alarm, or has a swollen, cracked, or leaking battery.
  • ⚠️ A computer, charger, printer, UPS, or accessory is too hot to approach or touch safely.

Move away from immediate danger and follow your site's emergency procedures. Call emergency services when appropriate. Do not open a power supply, UPS, or battery enclosure.

⚠️ Stop immediately for a security concern

  • You entered a password or MFA code on an unexpected page.
  • You approved an MFA request you did not initiate.
  • You opened a suspicious attachment, followed a suspicious link, or ran an unexpected program.
  • Files are being encrypted, renamed, deleted, or replaced by a ransom note.
  • A message requests an urgent payment, bank or payroll change, gift card, password, MFA code, or confidential information.
  • A camera, microphone, account, or computer appears to be used unexpectedly.

Call PCMIT promptly. Preserve the error or message. Do not run cleanup software, delete evidence, reply to the sender, or repeatedly reset passwords unless PCMIT instructs you to do so.

⚠️ Stop before changing protected systems or data

  • Windows requests a BitLocker recovery key.
  • A reset, reinstall, restore, wipe, profile deletion, or factory-reset option appears.
  • Important files are missing, duplicated, conflicting, or not synchronized.
  • The request involves legal, financial, HR, medical, regulated, or customer data.
  • You are asked for administrator credentials, another user's credentials, or an unexpected consent approval.
  • The next step would disable antivirus, encryption, firewall, MFA, backup, or another security control.

Never post a recovery key, password, MFA code, or security answer in a support ticket.

⚠️ Stop before changing shared infrastructure

  • The device is a server, firewall, switch, wireless access point, phone system, security camera, access-control device, or shared production system.
  • Multiple users, departments, locations, or customer-facing services are affected.
  • A printer, application, mailbox, file library, or line-of-business system is shared.
  • A restart or change requires a maintenance window.
  • The equipment or account belongs to another customer, department, or user.

Information to provide PCMIT

  1. Your name, company, location, and callback number.
  2. The computer or device name and asset tag, when available.
  3. The exact error message or code.
  4. What you were trying to do.
  5. When the problem began and who is affected.
  6. Whether one normal restart was completed.
  7. A safe screenshot with sensitive information removed.

Expected result

You avoid turning a routine issue into a safety event, security incident, data loss, or broader outage. PCMIT receives enough safe information to select the appropriate controlled response.
