Why sizing and compatibility matter
- A UPS has both a volt-ampere rating and a watt capacity. The connected load must remain within the manufacturer's limits.
- Pure sine wave output improves compatibility with computer power supplies, including equipment that uses active power-factor correction.
- Runtime depends on the UPS battery, its age, the connected load, and the condition of incoming power.
- A UPS is not a substitute for building electrical repair, grounding, surge planning, data backup, or safe shutdown procedures.
Before you begin
✓ Ask PCMIT to confirm the UPS model, watt and volt-ampere capacity, and approved connected equipment for the workstation.
✓ Confirm the wall outlet is grounded, secure, dry, undamaged, and suitable for the UPS according to the manufacturer's instructions.
✓ Save open work and follow the site's approved shutdown procedure before changing power connections.
Safe workstation setup
- Place the UPS upright on a stable, dry, ventilated surface.
- Connect the UPS directly to an appropriate grounded wall outlet unless its manufacturer and a qualified professional specify otherwise.
- Connect only the approved computer, monitor, and specifically approved low-draw network equipment to battery-backed outlets.
- Keep airflow openings clear and keep liquids, heaters, and direct heat away.
- Label the UPS with its location and service or battery-replacement date.
- Report replace-battery lights, fault codes, unexpected shutdowns, or repeated alarms to PCMIT.
Do not connect these items to an ordinary desktop UPS
- Laser printers or copiers
- Space heaters, fans with large motors, refrigerators, microwaves, or coffee equipment
- Vacuum cleaners, shredders, or other high-current appliances
- Another UPS, an extension cord, or a daisy-chained power strip
- Equipment whose maximum load has not been evaluated
Laser printers can draw very high current during operation. Schneider Electric/APC advises against connecting a laser printer to ordinary Back-UPS battery or surge-only outlets. A specially engineered installation requires separate sizing and approval.
Expected result
The workstation remains protected by an approved UPS without overload or fault indications. During a brief outage, users have time to save work and follow the approved shutdown process; the UPS is not used to continue normal work indefinitely.

- ⚠ The UPS displays a fault, overload, replace-battery warning, or continuous alarm.
- ⚠ Equipment turns off when the UPS transfers to battery.
- ⚠ The UPS or battery is hot, swollen, cracked, leaking, smoking, or producing an unusual odor.
- ⚠ The wall outlet is loose, damaged, ungrounded, wet, discolored, or sparking.
- ⚠ You need to add equipment or do not know which outlets are battery-backed.
Do not open a UPS or battery enclosure. For smoke, fire, sparks, or immediate electrical danger, move away, follow the site's emergency procedure, and call emergency services when appropriate.
